Concept Statement 

     I Wear My Dead Sister’s Clothes exists within the physical residue of a life: clothing, boxes, furniture, textures, memories, and the overwhelming accumulation of things left behind when someone dies. The scenic design transforms Candy’s home into both a literal space and a manifestation of Amy’s grief—a place that is warm, eccentric, beautiful, intimate, and increasingly impossible to escape.

    The exposed architecture of the house creates the suggestion of home without fully containing it, allowing Candy’s belongings to spill outward and dominate the space. Layers of fabric, clothing, rugs, boxes, and personal objects create a visual landscape that feels simultaneously curated and chaotic. Candy is absent, yet everywhere. Her belongings become surrogates for memory: things Amy can touch, smell, wear, rearrange, preserve, and ultimately struggle to release. This reflects Amy’s own admission that sometimes she cannot tell where she ends and her sister begins.

      Rather than treating the audience as distant observers, the environment invites them into Amy’s act of sorting—through objects, memories, anger, humor, guilt, love, and loss. The design therefore needed to support the intimacy and vulnerability of a solo performance while leaving space for Amy to physically navigate and transform the world around her. The result is less a realistic room than a house reconstructed through memory: part bedroom, part attic, part shrine, and part dream.

      Most importantly, the space is not meant to become clean by the end. Amy's resolution is not the elimination of Candy's things or the completion of grief. She ultimately chooses to leave the mess behind, take one piece of clothing with her, and reenter the world. The house remains—along with the grief—but Amy no longer has to remain trapped inside it.
