Concept Statement

The scenic design for School of Rock was rooted in transformation: creating a dynamic, flexible world capable of keeping pace with the energy of the production while giving new life to an existing scenic foundation. Rather than beginning again, the design embraced sustainable theatre practices, reimagining previously constructed scenery through slides, pull-outs, flippers, and adaptable scenic elements that could rapidly transform the stage from classroom to home, street, school interior, bar, and ultimately the Battle of the Bands.

Each configuration was designed to feel distinct and lived-in without sacrificing the open playing space necessary for a large, movement-driven musical. Transitions became part of the production's visual rhythm rather than interruptions to it, allowing scenery to shift without blackouts and requiring only two stage crew members working alongside the cast.

This approach reflects an important part of my practice as a community theatre designer: resourcefulness is not the opposite of good design. Reuse, adaptation, and thoughtful material choices can extend the life of existing scenery, reduce waste, and stretch limited production budgets while still creating a cohesive and engaging theatrical world. For School of Rock, those constraints became an opportunity to build a scenic vocabulary centered on movement, transformation, sustainability, and play.
